Health & Environmental Services Committee
From Nigov
The Health & Environmental Services Committee of Belfast City Council carries responsibility for all of the Council's many and diverse health and environmental control functions.
These range from monitoring and regulation of the safety of food and consumer products to the collection and disposal of solid waste and improvement of the quality and safety of the domestic, public and working environments to helping to secure the safety, health, welfare and convenience of persons in the built environment.
In addition, the Committee has responsibility for implementation of the Council's comprehensive waste management strategy. This includes the specification and monitoring of the delivery of refuse collection and street cleaning services as well as promotion of waste minimisation and recycling. It also involves the development of an integrated approach to waste management which recognises the value of waste as a resource and the need to reduce the amount of waste being disposed to landfill.
The Committee also acts as the Council's primary source of advice on all aspects of health and environmental policy and is responsible for overseeing the performance of the Health & Environmental Services Department.
The Health & Environmental Services Committee's primary aim is to make the most effective use of the Council's statutory powers and the resources allocated to it to secure and maintain a City environment which will promote the health, safety and well-being of the entire community.
