SPECIAL MEETING OF DEVELOPMENT (ARTS) SUB-COMMITTEE

Members present: Councillor Kelly (Chairman); and Councillors Adamson, Hartley and Kirkpatrick.

Apologies for inability to attend were reported from the High Sheriff (Councillor Humphrey) and Councillors Lavery, Maginness and Newton.

Familiarisation Visit

Pursuant to the Sub-Committee’s decision of 2nd November, the Members visited the undernoted arts organisations located throughout the city:

Linenhall Library

The Members were welcomed to the Linenhall Library by its Librarian, Mr. J. Gray, who conducted the Members on a tour of the facility.

Mr. Gray reviewed the history of the Library and the services which it provided and referred to the improvement works which had been undertaken at the facility.

At the conclusion of the visit, the Chairman (Councillor Kelly), on behalf of the Sub-Committee, thanked Mr. Gray for the useful information which he had provided.

Grand Opera House

The Sub-Committee met with Ms. E. Haller-Clarke and Mr. B. Forsythe at the Belfast Grand Opera House.

Ms. Haller-Clarke provided the Members with an update on the progress of the improvement works which were being undertaken currently at the Opera House and Mr. Forsythe conducted the Members on a short tour of the Theatre.

The Chairman, on behalf of the Sub-Committee, thanked the representatives of the venue for the useful information which they had provided.

Loss of Quorum

At this point the Chairman’s attention was drawn to the absence of a quorum. However, those Members in attendance agreed to proceed with visits to the Crescent Arts Centre, the Lyric Theatre and the Queens Film Theatre.
